Wysong Watch: UNM Upsets 19th-ranked Cougars
UNM wide receiver Luke Wysong lines up in the slot.
ALBUQUERQUE — The University of New Mexico Lobos (5-6) have upset the 19th-ranked Washington State Cougars (8-2) at University Stadium on Nov. 17.
This was UNM’s first win against an AP top-25 opponent since 2003, and Bronco Mendenhall’s Lobo squad is now one game away from a .500 record and bowl eligibility.
The star of the night was UNM quarterback Devon Dampier, who rushed for 192 yards and two touchdowns, including the game winner in the dwindling minutes. Dampier also threw for another 174 yards and one passing touchdown.
His top target of the night was Rio Rancho native Luke Wysong, who caught five balls for 71 yards.
On one play, Wysong beat a defender over the top for a 50-yard-plus touchdown, but Dampier put too much on the pass and overshot Wysong a bit.
Wysong also had one carry for 3 yards but, more importantly, kept the chains moving and proved once again that he is one of the premier separators and route runners in the Mountain West.
On the season, Wysong has 60 catches for 771 yards and two total touchdowns (one receiving, one punt return). He also has 55 rushing yards.
Wysong is 174 yards shy of reaching 1,000 scrimmage yards on the season, and the UNM standout seems like a sure lock for All-Mountain West honors.
The Lobos’ regular season finale comes on the road Nov. 30 against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (4-7).
