Wysong Watch: 15 returns, UNM escape San Diego with a win
UNM’s Luke Wysong takes a punt back for a touchdown against Air Force.
SAN DIEGO — The University of New Mexico Lobos football team (4-6) is leaving Southern California with a win as they defeated their Mountain West conference foe, the San Diego State Aztecs (3-6).
After missing a couple of games, standout UNM wide receiver Luke Wysong returned to the lineup.
In his return, the Rio Rancho native snagged the ball five times for 37 yards.
According to Pro Football Focus Database (PFF), Wysong played a total of 58 snaps: 27 snaps on passing plays and 31 plays as a run blocker.
His five targets were the lowest of the season, but that's because the Lobos relied heavily on their running game as they racked up 301 yards on the ground.
Another Rio Rancho native contributing to the effort was ascending wide receiver Nic Trujillo, who had one catch for 43 yards.
On the season — with two games remaining — Wysong has 55 catches, 700 receiving yards and two touchdowns (one receiving and one punt return).
The Lobos will continue to chase bowl eligibility and will face a big test at home Nov. 16 against nationally ranked Washington State Cougars (8-1). According to the most recent AP Poll rankings, the Cougars are ranked 19th in the country. Kickoff at University Stadium is 7:30 p.m.
