ALBUQUERQUE — University of New Mexico star wide receiver and former Cleveland Storm standout Luke Wysong was a 2024 All-Mountain West Second Team selection after having a career year, hauling in 69 catches, 895 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns (one receiving, one punt return).

However, Wysong’s career as a Lobo has come to an end.

After reports earlier last week that UNM head coach Bronco Mendenhall was being eyed for the Utah State head coaching vacancy, it became apparent that a ton of Lobos could be on their way out.

Then, the dominoes began to fall: Mendenhall officially accepted the Utah State head coaching gig, UNM offensive coordinator Jason Beck joined Kyle Whittingham’s coaching staff in the same role at the University of Utah, and UNM star quarterback Devon Dampier and Wysong, along with five other Lobo players, announced that they were entering the transfer portal.

In four years at UNM, Wysong caught 134 balls, racked up 1,664 scrimmage yards, and scored three touchdowns. He was also an electric returner and returned two punts for touchdowns in his career..

So, where will Wysong go next? Here are some possible destinations:

Arizona WildcatsWysong gave the Wildcats secondary headaches earlier in the season when he had 129 receiving yards and one touchdown. Recent reports suggest that Wildcat quarterback Noah Fifita will not enter the transfer portal, which means the former PAC-12 Freshman of the Year will need some new weapons with Wildcat wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan destined to be a top-five selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. Wysong would fit in nicely with a quarterback as accurate as Fifita.

Colorado BuffaloesThe Buffaloes are set to lose their top three wideouts, and Wysong would feast in offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur’s shotgun-centric offense. Wysong, a great separator, would be a nice security blanket for projected starting quarterback Ryan Staub. Also, let’s not forget about Wysong’s elite athleticism and versatility, which are traits that are highly coveted by head coach Deion Sanders. However, Sanders is expected to be a hot name for bigger college programs — and NFL teams — in search of a head coach.

Oklahoma State CowboysIt was a forgettable season for longtime head coach Mike Gundy’s squad that went 3-9. This team needs some juice for the upcoming season, and Wysong fits the bill. He can thrive as a contested catch weapon, a chain mover, and as an absolute menace in open space.

Utah State AggiesMendenhall might want to establish his “earned not given” culture at Utah State with some players who can lead by example. Wysong fits the bill and could form one of the best wide receiver duos in the country with Utah State star Jalen Royals. Also, Mendenhall programs produce a ton of NFL talent; some of his most recent players to be drafted include Green Bay Packers wideout Dontayvion Wicks, Indianapolis Colts tight end Jelani Woods, and Cleveland Browns safety Juan Thornhill.

Utah UtesWysong could very well follow former UNM offensive coordinator Jason Beck to Salt Lake City, Utah, to catch passes from Utes quarterback Isaac Wilson. Under Beck’s offensive scheme, which emphasizes motion and throwing the rock downfield, Wysong was able to thrive as a weapon in the slot or on the outside.
