Wrestling squads return from a big weekend

RIO RANCHO – While the Albuquerque metro area was busy this past weekend with swimming & diving and basketball Metro Championships, the wrestling squads headed out of town to face some new compeitition.

For t he Clevleand boys squad, it was off to Peoria, Arizona for the Peoria Tournament of Champions. 41 teams from a half dozen states clashed on the mats and CHS left Arizona with the silver medal. The Storm scored 250.5 points, good for second place.

Ricardo Poolaw (110-pound weight class) and Marcus Abeyta (132) both finished first in their weight classes to help their team to the podium. Roman Luttrell finished second in his weight class and improved his record to an impressive 25-2.

Not to be outdone, the Storm girls also finished in second (out of 38 teams) with a 164.5 point total. The Storm girls are now ranked 48th in the nation and rising.

Eloise Woolsey remains undefeated this season, and after taking first in her weight class, improved her record to 20-0.

The Rio Rancho boys and girls went in different directions this weekend.

For the boys, it was a long road trip to Geary, Oklahoma for the 80th Geary Invitational. The boys took 11th out of 17 with 44.5 points.

The Rams were helped by a second-place finish from rising star Xavier Pacheco, who took second in the 113-pound class.

The Rio Rancho girls grabbed 97 points and finished fifth (out of 17) in the Lady Pinto Invite, which was a little closer to home, taking place in Moriarty, New Mexico.

Salinda Stallings led the girls by taking 24 points and first place in the 152-pound class.

On the whole, it was a successful weekend for the RRPS wrestling teams, but there’s no time to rest on their laurels.

The teams head to Colorado next weekend for the Top of the Rockies (boys) and the Queen of the Hill (girls) tournaments.
