RIO RANCHO — Three potential names for New Mexico’s next hockey team, located in Rio Rancho, were announced Friday by its owner and operator. Now, fans can cast their vote for their favorite.

The Cutthroats, Goatheads and Tarantula Hawks are the finalists for the name of the “New Mexico Pro Hockey Club,” following a contest that included more than 2,000 suggestions, not only from the state, but throughout the U.S., according to a news release by REV Entertainment group.

The announcement comes following another on May 6 in which the ECHL, a AA hockey league, said it would add its 31st team of the league in Rio Rancho, come October 2026 — a welcome comeback for the icy sport in the City of Vision since The Scorpions ceased operations in 2009.

Voting is available at NMProHockey.com and open until 5 p.m. July 3, the release said.
