Storm's Del Angel commits to Oklahoma
Anthony Del Angel is greeted at the plate by his happy teammates after his three-run homer in the first inning provided more than enough runs to beat Artesia, 7-1, in Thursday’s quarterfinal round.
RIO RANCHO — Cleveland baseball standout Anthony Del Angel will take his talents to the University of Oklahoma next season.
“I love the overall vibe. The campus is really nice. I love the coaches and their whole view on baseball,” Del Angel said. “ I love the way they approach the game.”
This past season, the Oklahoma Sooners finished 38-22 under long-time head coach Skip Johnson.
“Not only baseball but the way they even wanna help me become a better person just in life ... It just felt like home,” Del Angel said of his decision to verbally commit to Oklahoma.
Del Angel is one of the top players in the country and was named the New Mexico Gatorade Player of the Year.
“When I found out, I got a text on my phone saying, ‘Congratulations on Gatorade Player of the Year.’ I showed my parents. They were very excited; it was a fun day,” Del Angel said.
Del Angel is the second in his family to win a GPOY award. During the 1999-2000, his mother, Brittney Diaz at the time, won the GPOY in volleyball while at Las Cruces High School.
“The work always continues,” Del Angel said. “That’s why I love Shall (coach Shane Shallenberger); he’s always coaching me up, making me a better player and person.”
According to Perfect Game USA, a baseball scouting service, Del Angel is 10-graded prospect, meaning he has the potential to be a very high MLB draft pick and is an elite level college prospect. He is also the 13th nationally ranked recruit in the 2026 class.
This past season, Del Angel hit .534 with 28 RBI, 17 extra-base hits, seven homeruns, went 13 for 13 on stolen base attempts and was the District 1-5A Player of the Year in addition to the GPOY recognition.
With one more season left in the silver and electric blue, expect Del Angel and the Storm baseball squad to fight hard for a state title.
“It’s going to be a special team. A lot of good guys coming back like Cisco Hernandez, Caleb Sandoval. We got a few freshman from this year like Santino [Williams], Ben [Herman], I think [Jacob] Vasquez is going to have a real good year,” Del Angel said. “As a team, all we can do is get better.”
