Storm girls track: The James and Bibeault rivalry continues at Richard Harper Invite
Cleveland’s Morgan James is foundational piece, and will certainly be in contention for plenty events at the state championships.
ALBUQUERQUE — The Cleveland High School girls track and field team took sixth place with 25 points at the 2025 Richard Harper Invite track meet April 25-26, and all eyes were glued to the track come hurdle time.
For what seems like the millionth time this season, Cleveland Storm hurdler Morgan James, the 2024 5A state champion in the 300-meter hurdles, battled it out against Los Alamos’ Colette Bibeault, the 2024 4A state champion in the same event.
“Her and I just go at it, but she’s great competition,” James said of her relationship with Bibeault. “She’s an amazing person, a sweet person, and I love competing against her.”
In the preliminarily race, Bibeault bested James with a time of 45.11 while James posted a 46.78.
Then came the finals, and both girls turned up the heat.
In the finals, James won by .02 seconds, posting a 44.36 time.
Ironically, Bibeault beat James in the 100-meter hurdles by .02 seconds. The Los Alamos standout came in first place with a 14.65; James posted a 14.67.
Besides the hurdles, the Storm also had a nice showing in the discus throw with senior thrower Mariana Delgado-Ortega throwing 105 feet, 10 inches, placing her in the top 3.
The Storm distance runners showed out in the 4x800-meter relay, finishing in second place with a time of 10:09.14. The team consisted of junior Marisel Yepa, freshman Alina Trujillo-Sando, junior Naomi St. Clair and senior Sarah Romero.
“We are all starting to connect, my team is running well, and we are all working hard in practice,” James said.
The Storm girls will take last week to prepare for the 2025 APS Metro Tournament at Community Stadium in Albuquerque May 1.
“Expect good things going forward,” James said.
