Storm alum Tre Watson waived by Chiefs, joins KC practice squad
NFL hopeful and former Cleveland Storm standout Tre Watson makes an appearance at the 2025 Storm youth camp.
Wednesday, Aug. 27:
RIO RANCHO — Tre Watson is staying in KC.
Cleveland’s own tight end officially cleared waivers on Wednesday morning, allowing the Chiefs to place him on their practice squad for the upcoming season.
Tuesday, Aug. 26:
RIO RANCHO — Tre Watson’s NFL journey will continue, but it may not be in Kansas City.
The former Cleveland High School standout and Fresno State/Texas A&M tight end was waived by the Chiefs on Tuesday morning, part of the NFL’s roster cutdown day.
Teams must trim down their roster from 90 players to 52 with the start of the season just nine days away.
Watson turned some heads in his stint at Chiefs camp, but due to a crowded depth chart of receivers and tight ends, he found himself as the odd man out.
Coming off his final season with the Aggies, Watson signed with Kansas City this past spring.
{div class=”subscriber-only”}He is the first Storm alumnus to crack the NFL, as he now looks for his contract to be picked up by another team.
Clearing waivers takes approximately 24 hours, and if not claimed, Watson will become an unrestricted free agent and will have the ability to sign with any team.

For those who may not know: the practice squad consists of players who practice with the team, but are not on the 53-man official roster. Players on the practice squad are paid a weekly salary and can be elevated to the active roster for game days or even promoted permanently to the main team.
Watson appears to be the lone tight end on the KC practice unit, as fellow TE Robert Tonyan, who was also waived, is potentially being signed to fill the gap left by suspended receiver Rashee Rice.
While there are a lot of names in front of Watson on the Chiefs’ charts, there is a chance he could see regular-season action.
Travis Kelce, closing in on his 36th birthday (and now engaged), is approaching the twilight of his career, while fourth-string tight end Jake Briningstool will start the season on the injured reserve.
With all these moving pieces and the natural wear and tear of the NFL season, we could see Watson get his shot sooner rather than later.
Kansas City opens its season on Friday, Sept. 5, in a divisional matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.
