ALBUQUERQUE — The Rio Rancho High School girls track and field had a nice showing at the 2025 APS Metro Tournament May 1-3, taking fifth place with a score of 41 points.

One of the fortes of the Rams squad has been the legs of the distance runners, and nearly winning the 1,600-meter run was freshman Mariah Galbraith, who ran a 5:11.34 mile.

"We all kind of matched our PRs or did better, so overall a good day," said Galbraith, who holds the school record in the 3,200-meter run. "We are a strong team, and we have strong coaches."

The Rams (featuring Galbraith) also came in first place in the 4x800-meter relay.

"Our 4x800 team is really, really close to state records and stuff," an excited Galbraith said. The Rams recorded a time of 10:20.88, which was seven seconds faster than second-place La Cueva.

The girls also found success in the throwing events. Freshman sensation Anni Presser nearly won the Metros with a throw of 35 feet, 10 inches, but Rio Grande's Isabella Files put up a throw that was 35 feet, 10.5 inches.

Sophomore Sarah Martinez came in third in the shot put (34 feet, 1/2 inch), and third in the discus with a throw of 11 feet.

However, the throwing events weren't the only successful field events; in the pole vault, junior Lily Romero recorded a score of 9 feet, 6 inches, landing her on the podium in third place.

The Rio Rancho Rams will look ahead to the 5A district track and field meet on their home turf May 10.

"Everyone has really good endurance, works really hard in practice, and I am overall excited to see what we can do," Galbraith said.
