RIO RANCHO — The Rio Rancho High School boys track and field team finished second overall at the 5A District 1 track and field championships May 10 at RRHS, scoring 93.84 points
The Rams were district champions in four events: the 100-meter dash, the 800-meter run, the 3,200-meter run and the 4x800 meter relay.
Senior Zachai Bradford started the day winning a district crown in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.97, the only sub-11 time of the day. He then competed in the long jump, jumping 21 feet, 9 1/2 inches for second place. Finally, he stepped in the shot put sector and took third place with a throw of 46 feet, 2 inches with only a few weeks of experience in the event under his belt.
National champion Charlie Vause coasted in the 800-meter run, coming in first place with a time of 1:57.04.
In second place was teammate Samuel Quesada, a freshman, who ran a 1:59.36. At the end of the race, Vause made sure the crowd cheered on Quesada, who qualified for state with his time.
The Rams also swept the 3,200-meter run with senior Xavier Martinez taking first place (9:53.99), junior Isaiah Galbraith taking second place (9:57.26), and senior Cody Sullivan taking third (10:04.49).
Rio Rancho also battled in the 200-meter dash and saw junior Kenneth Graves (22.10) and sophomore Marcus Briggs (22.40) place in the top five. Junior Parker Miller took sixth place in the 100-meter dash with a time 11.38.
Briggs also placed fifth in the long jump with 20 feet, 11 1/2 inches).
"It's a pretty nice day for all the events. I couldn't ask for anything else," Graves said.
Freshman Jalen Sealy had a nice outing in the high jump and found himself in second place by clearing a 5-foot, 10-inch jump.
The Rams will take the next few days to prepare for the 2025 NMAA State Championships track and field meet at the University of New Mexico May 16.
"We're going to show out. Every race, we're going to do our absolute best," Graves said.
