Puppy Bowl pup still up for adoption
RIO RANCHO — Watermelon Mountain Ranch’s 2025 Puppy Bowl participant is still up for adoption despite the publicity around her moment of recognition on Super Bowl Sunday.
Lizzie is a 9-year-old schnauzer mix with a heart murmur and requires extra care. Like many senior pets, Lizzie has been passed over because of her age.
Her being featured in the Puppy Bowl was a huge step for senior animals on the adoption market. Director Sara Heffern said at the time that Lizzie was the perfect dog to showcase in the Puppy Bowl.
Heffern has brought senior pets to the forefront of their adoption events before, and many of the beds at the organization’s mall location are taken up by senior animals. They were a focus during the Clear the Shelters event last year as well. Heffern said they were overwhelmed with pets at the time and attributed that to the number of seniors in their care.
Now, the ranch has taken to social media to get Lizzie’s name out there again as she is still in foster care.
“Our special girl was originally named Nippi, as she went into the municipal shelter as a found stray. She was severely matted, wearing a collar with a tag with her name on it but no other information. She was not microchipped and no one came forward for her,” a Feb. 26 post states.
It states that Lizzie would love a gentle and mellow home to enjoy her “sunset years.”
“She loves a good nap and prefers dogs her own speed. Young children make her nervous, so she would also like an all adult household. She does allow soft/gentle pets and it is going to take her some time to adjust and trust. She does not like to be quickly handled, walks OK on the leash, but would rather be treated like a queen and go for a stroll instead! Lizzie will allow us to dress her up, too. She is a super duper docile and lovely senior girl,” it added.
Those interested should email sarawmr@aol.com to set up a meet and greet with her.
