The Look Ahead (Sept. 4-11)

FOOTBALL

In football, the game of the week is clearly Rio Rancho High School at home against Las Cruces Sept. 6.

This will be a major test for Coach Pino and his emerging dark-horse Rams team, who are ranked 10 in the MaxPreps New Mexico 6A Football Rankings, despite their strong start.

Las Cruces is at 1-1, having taken down Mayfield (Aug. 23, 50-7) and losing a close one to a tough Volcano Vista team (Aug. 30, 27-24) in their first two games of the season, but they sit higher in the rankings at number 6. They are tough upfront and have a devastating ground game, thanks to junior running back Daniel Amaro.

Rams star QB JJ Arellano will need to be on top of his game, because the Bulldawgs are packed with ball hawks, like Devin Alba and Isaac Gomez, each of whom had a pick in the Las Cruces victory over rival Mayfield.

Cleveland won’t have it easy either. Clovis may have gotten blown out by RRHS last week, but it’s a tough road trip to southern New Mexico and they’ll be playing an angry Wildcats squad looking for revenge against some Rio Rancho boys.

Schedule

Sept. 6 – RRHS vs. Las Cruces, 7 p.m.

Sept. 6 – CHS @ Clovis, 7 p.m.

Sept. 6 – BHS vs Portales, 7 p.m.

BOYS SOCCER

It’s the best part of any soccer tournament. The Group Stage is over; no more Round Robin. Now, the Knockout Stage begins. This is where stories are made.

The Rams and the Storm will get a chance to write their stories together. Both teams ended up in the “Bronze Bracket,” and if they both win their first match, they will face off against one another in an all-Rio Rancho championship.

Look for RRHS to use their speed and precision tactics to dominate. At the same time, be on the lookout for a physical and strong CHS squad to come out of the gates swinging.

Schedule

Sept. 4 – CHS vs Highland (Metro – Bronze Bracket), 4:30 p.m.

Sept. 4 – RRHS vs Volcano Vista (Metro – Bronze Bracket), 4:45 p.m.

Sept. 6 – CHS vs Volcano/RRHS (Metro – Bronze Bracket), 4:30 p.m.

Sept. 6 – RRHS vs CHS/Highland (Metro – Bronze Bracket), 4:45 p.m.

Sept. 7 – BHS @ unnamed tournament, TBD

Sept. 9 – BHS @ Aztec, 5 p.m.

Sept. 10 – RRHS @ Capital, 3:30 p.m.

Sept. 11 – BHS @ West Mesa, 6:30 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

There are other games going on this week, but there’s no doubt about it, the Albuquerque Metro Championships are the story of the week. The Storm and the Rams girls put in huge efforts this past week, and both found success.

CHS will be playing in the championship “Gold Bracket” against the La Cueva Bears. A victory means they will face the winner of the Eldorado vs Hope Christian match.

RRHS will be playing in the “Silver Bracket” against Cibola. For them, a victory will mean a trip to face either Sandia, or top-of-the-division rivals, Volcano Vista.

Schedule

Sept. 3 – RRHS vs Cibola (Metro – Silver Bracket), 6:45 p.m.

Sept. 4 – CHS vs La Cueva (Metro – Gold Bracket), 7 p.m.

Sept. 5 – RRHS vs Volcano/Sandia - (Metro – Silver Bracket), TBD

Sept. 6 – CHS vs Eldorado/Hope (Metro – Gold Bracket), TBD

VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball has gotten off to an exciting start in the City of Vision. CHS is making waves with their dominance. RRHS is looking to rebound from a tough opening game.

This week, Cleveland will take on La Cueva in their first major test on Sept. 3. After that, they head south, along with Rio Rancho, to play in a tournament.

Watch for the Storm to use their size and D1 talent to dominate at the net on defense and their power-serve strategy to overwhelm opponents on offense.

For RRHS and BHS, it’s been a bit of a rockier start, but look for them to rebound, BHS against rival Espanola, and RRHS in southern New Mexico.

Schedule

Sept. 5 – BHS vs Espanola, 6:30 p.m.

Sept. 6 – Tournament – CHS vs Chaparral @ 9:45 a.m., CHS vs Gadsden @ 11:15 a.m., CHS vs Organ Mountain @ 12:45 p.m.

Sept. 6 – Tournament - RRHS vs Santa Teresa @ 9:45 a.m., RRHS vs Roswell @ 11:15 a.m., RRHS vs Centennial @ 12:45 p.m.

Sept. 10 – BHS @ Grants, 6 p.m.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Cleveland and Bernalillo will both attend the St. Pius Super Cinco cross-country meet, looking to build on early season momentum.

Schedule

Sept. 7 – CHS, BHS @ St. Pius Super Cinco, 8 a.m.
