NM’s top swim teams dive in for Cleveland Invite

RIO RANCHO — The Cleveland Storm and the Rio Rancho Rams swim teams hit the pool at the Rio Rancho Aquatic Center Dec. 7 to compete against the state’s top teams in one of the most difficult meets of the season, the Cleveland Invite.
What makes this particular competition so difficult?
Well, besides the high quality of the opponents, the swimmers say the pool conditions are not optimal for meets.
“See how when a swimmer hits the wall to make their turn, there’s a wave that gets pushed with them,” explained RRHS captain Caleb Solis. “Now see how the water runs over the ledge, like an infinity pool? That makes it so the wave doesn’t break up, and when you make your turn, it pushes back against you.”
The pool at the Aquatic Center offers some advantages though, according to CHS swimmer Karan Hari.
“We practice here, so it’s a great pool for practice.”
Additionally, the water is kept fairly cold, which is a major benefit to swimmers, said Hari.
“Warm water makes your muscles relax and loosen,” he explained. “Cold water makes the muscles contract quickly, which helps with fast movement.”
Both schools performed well at Cleveland’s home meet, which began with Solis singing a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem.
The top performance for either school was Storm swimmer Ava Schlosser’s first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, which she completed in 25.49 seconds.
For the boys, the top finish was a tie. Rams swimmer Charlie Scott finished third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:42.82. Storm swimmer Guha Hari also finished third, but in the 100-yard fly. His time was 1:01.33.
In the team standings, the Rams girls finished third and the Storm girls finished fourth. The Rams boys finished fifth and the Storm boys finished seventh.
