RIO RANCHO — The Rio Rancho High School DECA Chapter had a successful showing at the New Mexico DECA State Career Development Conference March 3-4.
“The competition at the state level is intense. Thankfully, our students were up to the challenge and performed at the champion level.” RRHS DECA advisor Raymond McKinney said.
Out of 82 qualifiers, 68 RRHS students competed in their event, 38 made it to the finals, and 22 qualified for the International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida, April 25-30.
“They studied for a written exam and practiced solving business issues to be ready for state. Our chapter officer team conducted practice sessions twice a week since early January,” McKinney said.
The RRHS DECA Chapter won recognition for completing the “Membership, Community Service, and Promotional” campaigns.
“Our DECA program is an elective at Rio Rancho High School. As an international organization, DECA provides our students with opportunities to learn and grow their leadership and business skills. Our chapter competed against chapters from all over the state,” he said.
RRHS DECA members winning gold, state champions, were junior Aubrey Ytuarte, senior Hyder Mandilawi (who earned a 100% presentation score), junior Wyatt Rodriguez (who earned a 100% presentation score), senior Mario Templeton, and senior Abe Hoffman (a four-time nationals qualifier). Also, junior Ella Schaffer was selected to represent New Mexico as a “special delegate” to vote for next year’s national officer members.
