King of the Hill Gill wins NM Games at Tenpins & More

Published Modified

RIO RANCHO — In early November, bowler Jacob Gill took down all challengers and was crowned “King of the Hill” at the Tenpins & More tournament of the same name. Now, Gill has a New Mexico Games gold medal to add to the title.

Gill won the Men’s Open Scratch Division gold at the state finals of the NM Games last weekend at Tenpins & More in Rio Rancho, according to a news release from bowling alley owner Steve Mackie.

“Gill was solid throughout his six-game set, putting together 215, 209, 244, 204, 210 and a closing 258 (which included 10 strikes from 12 deliveries) to beat East Mountain’s Land Matthies 1,340-1,297, followed by former Rams bowler, Tyler Grier with 1,250,” said Mackie in the news release.

Matthies wasn’t the only member of his family to have an impressive showing. His father Josh posted a handicap-added 1,433 and earned the Men’s A gold. Rio Rancho’s Andrew Carver finished second (1,363) and Joseph Paterson, out of Socorro, got the bronze (1,333).

Some of the other tournament highlights include a impressive showing in the Men’s B Division, where Ward Stoffer (1,456) got gold after a big sixth game in which he threw 11 strikes and finished with a score of 262 (300 is a perfect score in bowling).

A close finish gave the Women’s A Division gold to Robin Prioleau, who staved off Becky Fisher by a mere 16 pins.

In Women’s C, Vanessa Griego took gold, inspired by her twin boys Aubrey and Gavin, who recently began their high school bowling careers at Rio Rancho High School. The Griego twins took silver and bronze in the Boys B Division.

First-time tournament bowler Monica Archibeque found herself on the medal stand, grabbing the bronze in Women’s C.

The husband-and-wife team of Steve and Laurie Shultz won both the Senior Men’s A and the Senior Women’s A divisions.
