RIO RANCHO — The 23rd annual Park in the Park car show was backdropped by a hot, but not too hot, sunny day April 26 at Campus Park with hundreds of people turning out for the event.

On a social media post, Rio Rancho Mayor Gregg Hull said there were about 200 cars parked at the park.

It was quite the sight. Still somewhat under construction, the City Center park was full of cars. There were many varieties with some being individual in nature and others being one of many.

One individual vehicle, situated in the upper parking lot near HP, was a 1981 Fiat Spider 2000. The owner from Rio Rancho said he did all the work himself to get the car in premium condition. The compact classic achieves 120-140 horsepower with a turbocharger, but the convertible can be a fun cruiser for those just looking to drive a weekend car once in a while, he said.

Albuquerque resident Geoff Danielson was in the same lot with his yellow Datson 240z. He regularly takes part in the Albuquerque Z Car Club, which includes all years of Nissan and Datsun Z.

In general, there were very few unique classic cars among the hundreds of MOPARs and Corvettes.

Some other unique classics not seen very often were a mint green 1960 Corvair, a 1970s Camaro Z28, a 1952 Willys Army Jeep and the DeLorean that reminds people of “Back to the Future.”

The Jeep, which was also an M38 used during the Korean war, was a popular stop for kids to try out the large (unloaded) gun on the back.

Another Rio Rancho car, owned by Richard and Debbie, was a 1964 Barracuda, which was parked under the large structure at the park.
