RIO RANCHO — After a teen was pronounced dead from a Cochiti Lake boat accident March 29, his family and friends plan to host a vigil for him in Rio Rancho at 7:15 p.m. April 9.

Cleveland High School baseball coach Robert Montoya identified the teen as Owen Pagano, 16, of Rio Rancho. According to MaxPreps, he played JV baseball for Cleveland High School last year but is not listed on any roster for the current season. Montoya said Pagano hadn't tried out for the season this year but the team is still heartbroken by the news.

"We are deeply saddened to remember Owen Pagano. He was a dedicated young man, consistently demonstrating a strong work ethic. His cheerful smile was a constant source of warmth and positivity, and he was an exceptional teammate, always encouraging and supporting those around him," Montoya said. "Owen had a remarkable ability to elevate the performance and spirit of everyone he knew."

He said Pagano will be profoundly missed by his friends "who will forever cherish the memories of his kindness and the positive influence he had on their lives."

He added that the team has been honoring Pagano as best as they can.

"Trying to remember the memories we shared. Owen was an amazing young man. His loss will affect us, and his family is in our thoughts and prayers," Montoya said.

The Rio Rancho Public School District also issued a statement.

"Rio Rancho Public Schools is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our students. This is a heartbreaking event for our community, and we hope to come together during this difficult time to support the affected family and each other. We also recognize the profound impact this loss may have on students across the district. School counselors, social workers and administrative staff are available to provide support and guidance to those in need," the district said.

Cibola Little League also posted about Pagano's death on Facebook.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of one of our Cibola family members. Owen Pagano was a player for Cibola for many years and moved onto Cleveland baseball. Please keep the Pagano family in your thoughts. Cibola board will be hosting a candle light vigil in honor of Owen. We will have drinks and sweet treats for sale, and a donation box. All proceeds will be given to the Pagano family," the post states.

In addition to those funds, a GoFundMe campaign started for Pagano's family has raised more than $27,000 as of Friday afternoon.

"It is with heavy hearts that we share the devastating loss of Owen, a bright and loving 16-year-old who was taken far too soon. Owen was a son, a brother, a friend, and a source of joy to everyone who knew him. His absence leaves an unimaginable void, and his family is now facing the unbearable pain of saying goodbye," reads the GoFundMe campaign.
