Diving into the weekend’s swimming action
ALBUQUERQUE — The Storm swim team had a double-header this past week as they headed to Albuquerque twice in two days for two different tournaments.
The first was the Academy Invite, which took place at the Albuquerque Academy Natatorium on Friday, Dec. 13. The second was APS Invite #5, which took place on Saturday, Dec. 14, at the West Mesa Aquatic Center.
Official results from the Academy Invite had not been posted as of print time.
At the Volcano Vista Invite, the Storm boys finished in third after strong showings from Dylan Schluep and Lucas Espinosa, who led the team with 17 and 16 points, respectively. Additionally, Guha Hari and Diego Cavadas Comarella each earned a silver medal.
In total, the boys nabbed five medals in the contest (two silver and three bronze.)
On the girls’ side, Cleveland finished fourth, but Ava Schlosser continued her dominant ways, touching each level of the medal stand (a gold, silver, and bronze). Her 25.75 time in the 50-meter free was the top performance in the meet, according to the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA) score. She was also her team’s top all-around point-getter, with 20.
Lucia Pena was right on her heels, though. Pena was second on the team with 16 points.
Chloe Ledesma and Ziyah Chavez-Rodriguez each scored in the double digits as well (13 and 14).
The CHS Swim team will take a brief break during the holidays but will return to action in January. They’ll head north to Farmington on Jan. 4, and then it’s back to Albuquerque for the APS Metro Championships, taking place Jan. 11 (girls) and 18 (boys) at the West Mesa Aquatic Center.
