ALBUQUERQUE — The Cleveland High School boys track and field team took first place at the Richard Harper Invite track meet April 25-26, which was hosted by Albuquerque Academy.

The Storm boys took first place by scoring 95.5 points; in second place was La Cueva high school with 69 points.

“So far, we’ve done amazing. I am very proud of everyone on our team,” said senior jumper Leo Cisneros, who competes in the high jump and the triple jump for the Storm. “People can continue to expect amazing things from us.”

As has been the case all year, the Storm throwers cleaned up and scored in all three throwing events.

Winning the shot put was junior Moses Sparks with a 54-feet, 2-inch mark. Spark’s teammates, senior Gabriel Marquez and senior Robby Sabado, placed fourth and fifth in the shot.

In the javelin, Storm throwers Brandon Schluep and Cylus Romero placed top six and secured points. Schluep threw the javelin 159 feet, 5 inches for fifth place, while Romero threw it 155 feet, 4 inches for sixth place.

Storm jumper Tahi Gonzales also proved, once again, to be one of the best in the state by placing top three in both the triple jump and the long jump. Gonzales, a senior, also competed in the high jump.

In the triple, Gonzales put up 43 feet, 7 inches, which won him second place.

“We didn’t think I was going to score today, and then right off the bat I hit a 43 (feet), 7 1/2 (inches) to put myself in first place till finals came, and then Piedra Vista, and good job to them, hit a 43 (feet), 11 (inches),” Gonzales said. That number was put up by Spencer Womack.

On the track, Storm runner Lucas Espinosa came in second place in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:17.82, just a couple of seconds shy from Rio Rancho High School standout Cody Sullivan, who ran a 4:15.43.

Sprinter Juan Munoz, a senior, also ran a 10.81 100-meter dash, taking second place behind La Cueva standout Tanner Montano (10.75).

Another standout was junior Evan Nanez, who helped the Storm to a second-place finish in the 4x200 meter relay. The other sprinters were Munoz, junior Jacob Maldonado and senior Julian Ortega.

Coming up for the Storm boys team is the ABQ Metros Tournament May 1 at Community Stadium in Albuquerque.
