Cleveland girls track team fourth place at Metros with individual champions in two events
ALBUQUERQUE — The Cleveland Storm girls track and field team found lots of success at the APS Metro Tournament at Community Stadium May 1-3.
"We are thirsty; we are ready to run," 4x100 meter relay sprinter Jennica Montejano said.
The Storm girls came in fourth place (55.5 points) and won first place in two events.
Junior hurdler Morgan James cooked again, winning first place in the 100-meter hurdles (14.86) and the 300-meter hurdles (45.34). James had sizable leads in both events. She even earned the applause of a Volcano Vista coach who shouted, "Great run, Cleveland!" as James finished the preliminary 300-meter hurdles.
In the discus event, senior Mariana Delgado-Ortega threw 115 feet, 1 1/2 inches, earning second place.
The distance runners also logged some tough miles on the track, including a 12:22.38 time in the 3,200-meter run from sophomore Meg Mauermann. Her performance put her in third place and was a personal record for her as well.
In the 1,600-meter run, senior Shahad Akasha showed out with a 5:14.30 mile, which led to a third-place spot on the podium.
Sophomore Karrisa Williams showed off some speed and pace in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:02.69, good enough for fifth place.
Next, the Storm girls will compete at the 5A District track and field meet which is being hosted at Rio Rancho High School May 10.
"Watch out; we're coming," Montejano said.
