APS announces new clear-bag policy for 25-26 school year
RIO RANCHO — Heads up, Rams and Storm fans.
On Wednesday afternoon, Albuquerque Public Schools announced a new “clear-bag policy” for the 2025-26 athletic school year.
Purses that are not clear, briefcases, coolers, backpacks (if you are not a student-athlete), drawstring bags, computer bags and luggage of any kind are prohibited.
This new rule will be implemented at APS athletic venues, such as stadiums, fields and gyms. It will also be applied to middle school athletic events.
The policy will be put into effect immediately, with high school football and volleyball set to start next week.
Other school districts, such as Los Lunas and Las Cruces, implemented clear-bag policies in the 2024-25 school year. But in Rio Rancho, their current bag policy will remain in place.
“Rio Rancho does not have a clear bag policy,” Rio Rancho Director of Athletics Todd Resch said. “Instead, bag searches are conducted upon entry.”
The city of Rio Rancho will run into Albuquerque’s new policy when both schools compete in the APS Metro soccer tournament, set to begin on Aug. 23 at the APS Complex.
