7-on-7s return to Cleveland
RIO RANCHO — Cleveland High School once again played host to some summer football “7-on-7s” July 22.
Freshman teams in attendance included the hometown Cleveland Storm, the Eldorado Eagles, the Rio Grande Ravens and the Los Lunas Tigers.
“It was a lot of fun. I am proud of my guys. This is a beautiful stadium, and thank you to Cleveland for hosting,” said Los Lunas quarterback Ron Patel, who showed off some impressive arm strength throughout the day.
In ironic fashion, a literal storm delayed the scrimmages, but after a 30-minute delay, the games continued.
As the young players got some much-needed reps, rain still poured but didn’t stop players from shining.
Among the standouts was Storm running back Gabriel Samora, who looked comfortable running routes and cutting in.
“We want to get back on Los Lunas, our first game, and I think we play Eldorado on the 14th ... we’re going to get those getbacks, I promise you that,” Samora said.
Cleveland quarterback Sam Christopher also looked comfortable dishing out passes and found success working the middle of the field.
A visiting player making some waves as a deep threat was Eldorado receiver Lamont Allison, who caught a handful of deep shots to send the Eagles flying.
“I feel like we did great ... we’ve got a lot of young stars,” said Allison as Eldorado went undefeated through all games played.
