More transit funding needed

As a librarian for over 30 years, I am a strong proponent of all public services that enhance the lives of residents, and as a Rio Metro rider for over 15 years, I know firsthand the importance of public transit.

As a long time rider, I’ve been incredibly grateful for Rio Metro and the professionalism and dedication of each staff member I’ve encountered. I’ve watched with excitement as the services have expanded to allow nonmedical trips to Rio Rancho and Corrales, offering those of us who rely upon transit the opportunity to explore these communities.

By riding with Rio Metro, I’m afforded opportunities I would otherwise not have, such as the ability to go to medical appointments and to shop.

While I am thrilled with Rio Metro and the transit options provided, I encourage our lawmakers to provide additional transit funding this session. Doing so would create so many additional opportunities for riders who do not have personal vehicles or the ability to drive to experience the vibrant cities around us. Extending hours to weekends and evenings or providing transportation to connect with the Rail Runner would not only allow riders to enjoy restaurants, visit museums, and shop, but it would also help to boost the local economy.

If our state’s leaders are concerned with transit making a profit, that should not be a consideration. Much like the police or libraries, transit is a public service meant to enhance quality of life for residents, and it should be expanded as much as possible.

I’m profoundly thankful for the services we have, and I hope that our legislators will strongly consider additional funding for transit services across the state.
