LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Vicious comments are not jokes
J.D. Vance, it is indeed the Fall Festival season, and I do wonder if you fell off the pumpkin wagon as of late.
You said boys (not girls) including (I assume) your own kids just say stupid mean things that should not ruin their lives for the future. OK, the last part I will agree with, but not the other.
As an educator, I never let children talk like that, and if they did I ruined their recess by asking them to lie their head down, relax and think about how they might be kinder to others. I also raised two children who happen to be a male and female, both capable of brazen behavior if they choose. Neither child ever made vicious comments, "jokes" that were racist, homophobic, against Jews, or sexist, etc., etc., etc., even though they were amusing.
Do you know why? Because we as their role models did not say or find them funny nor amusing in any sense of the words. Kids don't listen to what you say, they watch what you do! This mentality is very J.D. (juvenile delinquent). Did your parents look into your future and name you J.D. for a reason?
