LETTER: The growing cancer of American politics
Our Founding Fathers were aware of political parties and how they can be a detriment to our democratic republic. Too many politicians today are more dedicated to their political party than with the American people they are supposed to represent. When our elected representatives stop being a true representative of the people, this is the beginning of the cancer. To eradicate this cancer, you vote them out of office. A quote from John Adams: “There is nothing which I dread so much as a division o the republic into two great parties.”
We have that today, a division of two political parties that have failed in their oath of office to the American people. In Congress, there is too much destructive rhetoric on a personal level toward each other. Too many politicians do this rather than work together in getting legislation passed that benefits the people they represent. This is the growing cancer that exists when elected officials tend to find ways of not working together for the American people.
We the voters are the only ones who must find ways to elect people that our democracy depends on true and honest representatives of the Constitution. The cancer of American politics will continue if this is not resolved by the American voter. We must not elect people who are just party politicians.
This next quote by Thomas Jefferson is what I believe is another cancerous problem in our American politics. “A man under the tyranny of party sprit is the greatest slave upon Earth.” You can be sure there is extreme pressure at times for our elected officials to vote a certain way even though it is not in the best interest of his or her voters back home. This next quote is by President Dwight D. Eisenhower and believe this is the present state of the Republican Party: “If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.”
I just saw it reported (Aug. 5, 2024) on one of the news channels, this statement was made by Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson: “If we cannot win at the polls, we will at the Supreme Court.” This is just what we, the American voters, do not want to hear from any person. We must make sure every state of the union have complete and accurate election results and officially certified as such.
Based on the statement mentioned above, the cancer continues. This next presidential election, November 2024, is critical for the future of our Democratic Republic. It is our responsibility and our patriotic duty to vote for the right people that will by their oath of office is to defend and protect our constitution and a true representative of the American people.
