LETTER: Support bills that benefit veterans

As we approach the November 2024 general election, I urge my fellow New Mexicans to support two crucial ballot measures — House Joint Resolution 5 (HJR 5) and House Joint Resolution 6 (HJR 6). These measures will significantly improve the quality of life for our disabled veterans and their surviving spouses, honoring their service and sacrifices.

HJR 5 gives all disabled veterans a proportional property tax exemption based on their VA disability rating. This means that the more severe a veteran’s disability, the greater the property tax relief they will receive. Our disabled veterans have given so much for our country, and this measure ensures they receive the support they need and deserve.

HJR 6 raises the exemption on property taxes for veterans and their surviving spouses from $4,000 to $10,000 in 2024 and then adjusts for inflation in each subsequent year. This increase acknowledges the rising cost of living and ensures that the financial relief provided keeps pace with economic changes, offering sustained support to our veterans and their families.

Both resolutions require a constitutional amendment, making your vote in the upcoming election pivotal. By voting yes on HJR 5 and HJR 6, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom and security.

Let’s come together to show our veterans and their families that New Mexico stands with them. Vote yes on HJR 5 and HJR 6 this November and help provide the support our veterans have earned.
