LETTER: Students deserve inclusive environment

Published Modified

As a concerned citizen and educator, I believe it is important to create safe and inclusive learning environments for all students. While some may object to the idea of LGBTQ+ safe zone signs in schools, I believe that these signs serve as a powerful symbol of acceptance and support for students who may be struggling with their identity.

The purpose of these signs is to let students know that they are welcome and valued, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. They provide a visual cue that students can turn to if they are feeling unsafe or need help. By creating these safe spaces, we can help to foster a more inclusive and supportive school culture.

I understand that some people may have concerns about the appropriateness of these signs in schools. However, it is important to remember that these signs are not promoting a political agenda. They are simply a way to show students that they are cared for and accepted.

I urge the school district to allow educators — using their district-approved training and professional judgment — to choose between a generic school logo or a rainbow flag design for the LGBTQ+ safe zone signs, based on the specific needs of their student population. This will ensure that Safe Zone signs are appropriate and welcoming for all students.

By working together, we can create schools that are truly safe and inclusive for all students.

Sincerely,

Billie Helean
