LETTER: Educating conservatives

Regarding the paranoid, misguided rant by Corrine Rios and previous rants by various local conservatives wanting to ban and burn books: I will never understand why some people fear education and are obsessed with what other people do with their reproductive organs.

Common sense dictates why dangerous items (medications, weapons, etc.) would not be available to children, but knowledge and information are not in the same category. I get that some people, due to their lack of knowledge of biblical texts and constitutional rights, in conjunction with the MAGA movement desiring authoritarianism and idol worship of Trump, fear truth and facts, but the rest of us do not.

The cute little library laws that were posted in the missive by Rios would be thrown out by any court based on First Amendment protection and the fact that “mature content” is subjective, has never been a “threat” to developing minds (never proven by science), but which that claim is only based on other people’s prejudice and their own preferences.

City, county and state laws do not supersede the Bill of Rights. Half-baked small-town politicians can create laws which will not stand constitutional muster; that happens on a daily basis. This endless virtue signaling from wannabe professional politicians trying to advance their career is tiresome. You people are not pillars of the community, your moral turpitude is suspect, you are not paragons of virtue and the majority of us do not want people like you stunting the intellectual growth of kids and future generations. We value the education that many of you so obviously lack and refuse to capitulate to your endless efforts at dumbing down our society and humanity at large.
