GUEST COLUMN: BeWell able to help residents navigate insurance changes

Published Modified

As we head toward this year’s open enrollment, New Mexicans will have to navigate historic changes to health insurance coverage this year.

You may have heard that federal and state law changes will impact those who have marketplace coverage or residents looking for coverage in 2026, but BeWell, New Mexico’s Health Insurance Marketplace, can help.

BeWell is New Mexico’s state-based marketplace, where plans are offered to those who don’t qualify for Medicaid or Medicare and don’t have access to affordable health insurance through their employer. We are the only place where someone can qualify for federal and/or state subsidies to reduce their monthly premiums and other health care costs. More than 50% of BeWell customers pay $10 or less for health insurance.

While it’s true that the federal government eliminated some premium subsidies and others are on track to end Dec. 31, in the recent special legislative session, the governor and New Mexico Legislature took quick action to stop residents from shouldering the burden of these higher costs alone. Our state’s intervention will save thousands of dollars for the 76,000 New Mexicans with BeWell, which is even more critical as consumers are forced to face historic increases in the cost of health insurance.

It’s important to remember that factors like your income, household size, immigration status and more can change what you qualify for. But whatever your situation, BeWell is a trusted place to get your questions answered. Our certified assisters are committed to helping every New Mexican find affordable, reliable health insurance during this year’s open enrollment. And even if you don’t qualify for coverage through us, we can help you and your family with other options — all for free.

If you will be shopping for coverage during the upcoming open enrollment or do not have health insurance, we would love to discuss your options and just how affordable a plan through BeWell can be. Please call 833-862-3935 or go to bewellnm.com to learn more. We’re here to help.
