ELECTION 2024 candidate column: Joshua Jones, Sandoval County District 5
Since being appointed by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, I’ve had the privilege of serving as your county commissioner for Sandoval County District 5. Over the last two years, I’ve worked hard to ensure that our communities — whether small towns, pueblos or Native American nations — are heard, supported and empowered. My goal has always been to advocate for the needs of our district, and I’m proud of the progress we’ve made in securing resources that uplift us all.
Championing our communities
From the start, I’ve focused on building strong relationships with the communities of District 5. I’ve spent time meeting with the leaders of our Native American nations, including a productive meeting with Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren and Chapter House leadership, Jicarilla Apache Nation and pueblo leadership. These discussions are key in understanding the unique challenges each community faces and ensuring each receives the support they deserve. My participation in the All Pueblo Council of Governors’ meetings has further strengthened our collaborative efforts.
One of my proudest accomplishments was leading the charge to sign a letter of support for San Felipe Pueblo on legislation sponsored by Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury. I am pleased to report that this initiative passed with unanimous approval. Many thanks to our entire commission and staff for making this possible. Our success isn’t just a win for San Felipe Pueblo — it’s an example of what we can achieve when we work together to advocate for the needs of our communities.
Delivering real results for District 5
• I have always been focused on action and results — finding solutions to make immediate, impactful change. As a public servant, my job is to deliver for the people I represent, and I’m proud to say that we’ve secured vital funding for many of the communities in District 5. Although too numerous to detail here, these funds have been critical in addressing immediate community needs such as food security, veterans’ services and public education. But I’ve also worked to ensure our long-term infrastructure is supported.
Addressing food insecurity
As commissioner, one of my primary concerns has been addressing food insecurity, particularly for children and vulnerable families. By supporting local food pantries and the kids’ backpack program, we’ve helped ensure that no child in our district goes hungry. These programs provide critical support to families in need, allowing students to focus on their education without the distraction of food insecurity.
Looking ahead
As we look toward the future, I’m more determined than ever to continue the work we’ve started. My vision for Sandoval County remains focused on sustainable development, clean energy and continued advocacy for our rural and tribal communities. The relationships we’ve built over the last two years will be the foundation for continued progress, and I will keep fighting for the resources and support that District 5 needs.
On November 5th, I humbly ask for your vote to continue this critical work. We’ve made significant progress together, but there is still much more to do. With your support, we can continue to move Sandoval County forward. I’m committed to delivering results and ensuring that District 5 remains a thriving and inclusive community.
Thank you for your trust and support. Let’s keep building a brighter future together.
