ELECTION 2024 candidate column: Joshua Hernandez, New Mexico House District 60
As your state representative for District 60 in Rio Rancho, I believe public safety is key to building strong communities. It’s what allows our children to play safely, families to walk without fear, and businesses to thrive. I’m proud to say that District 60 has the lowest crime rate in New Mexico, according to CrimeStatsNM.org. This didn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of strategic investments, hard work and the dedication of our community and first responders.
Investing in our first responders
To keep crime rates low, we must take action. I’ve directed over $2.5 million in capital outlay funds specifically for public safety. Unlike other parts of the state where funds sit unused, our money is at work. This includes new police vehicles, body cameras, fire engines, ambulances and necessary infrastructure. These tools help our police officers, firefighters and dispatchers do their jobs effectively.
First responders are the backbone of public safety. They answer the call when we need them most. I’m honored to have the endorsement of the Rio Rancho Police & Dispatchers Association and the Rio Rancho Firefighters IAFF 4877. These endorsements are a testament to the trust between me and those who protect our community.
Community collaboration: The heart of safety
Public safety is a team effort. Neighborhood watch programs, community policing and public safety workshops have all played a part in making our district safer. Local businesses contribute by implementing security measures that not only protect their establishments but also the community at large.
I encourage everyone to be involved. Attend community meetings, get to know your neighbors and stay connected with local law enforcement. Together, we can keep our district safe.
Addressing new challenges
While we celebrate our low crime rates, we can’t become complacent. New challenges like cyber threats, substance abuse and mental health crises demand new strategies. In the legislature, I am committed to pushing for policies that address these issues, such as better mental health services and education to prevent crime before it happens.
A vision for a thriving district
Public safety is about more than just reducing crime. Safe communities bring in new residents, attract businesses and create a better quality of life. Our district is proof that when we focus on safety, the entire community benefits.
Appreciating our community heroes
I want to extend my deepest thanks to our first responders, community members and local organizations for their dedication. You are the reason District 60 is the safest place in New Mexico. Let’s continue to build on this strong foundation, staying committed to public safety and supporting one another. Together, we can keep District 60 safe, prosperous and thriving for generations to come.
