ELECTION 2024 candidate column: Catherine Cullen, House District 57
Rio Rancho stands as a beacon of hope for our entire state. It has become one of the best places in the nation for families to live, work and raise children. Our community thrives because of thoughtful leadership, a commitment to safety and quality education. These foundations have made Rio Rancho a place where people can truly flourish. At the heart of this success is forward-thinking leadership. Together, we have built a city where people can thrive, not just survive.
Unfortunately, this success contrasts sharply with the growing struggles in other parts of New Mexico. Crime, fentanyl addiction, rising costs and a failing education system have created significant challenges throughout the state. For years, Republicans have offered solutions to address these problems. Yet, the increasingly progressive majority in the state legislature has either ignored or refused to act on these pressing issues. This was evident during the special legislative session this past July when progressive lawmakers sent everyone home without passing a single crime-fighting bill. At a time when public safety is at risk, their inaction speaks volumes. Crime is rising, and fentanyl continues to ravage families, yet these crises are met with indifference.
The reality is clear: We cannot rely on politicians who refuse to confront our state’s most urgent problems. To create lasting change in New Mexico, we must vote for leaders who advocate for all New Mexicans and ensure our communities have the support they need to thrive. Collaboration between local leaders and community members has delivered real results in Rio Rancho. As a school board member, I partnered with Rio Rancho’s leadership to implement a strong career and technical education. Investing in facilities and programs like Shining Stars Preschool helps provide our youngest learners with a solid foundation for future success.
Public safety also requires immediate attention. We must stop the revolving door in our justice system, reform juvenile detention, address bail reform for repeat offenders and strengthen criminal competency standards. Investing in mental health services and substance abuse treatment is equally critical. I’m serious about reducing crime and addressing its root causes. That’s why I’m backed by Rio Rancho’s Police and Communications Association.
Education must remain a top priority. Our state’s education system is in crisis, reflected by our fifth Public Education Department (PED) secretary and dead-last national ranking. We need to implement K-3 reading coaches statewide and empower local school boards with more control to serve their communities better. Expanding B.A./M.D. programs and reforming the Malpractice Act will help address the shortage of medical professionals in New Mexico. Additionally, providing incentives, such as student loan forgiveness for physicians, will strengthen our health care system.
Rio Rancho has set the standard for how New Mexico can prosper with the right leadership and values. We are at a crossroads. One path leads toward complacency and further decline, while the other leads to continued growth and prosperity. A crucial part of that growth includes investing in infrastructure to support our thriving community. Additionally, fixing the tax code, reducing burdensome regulations, and unleashing the energy sector’s potential will play a critical role in combating inflation. I am prepared to continue advocating for our community with the same dedication and focus that has driven our success.
