RIO RANCHO — Estrella Perez, 37, of Rio Rancho, was summoned Aug. 15 for trafficking fentanyl.

A caller saw a man break a rear window on a car and drive away in it. This vehicle was located minutes later, with police stopping it near Coors Boulevard and Ellison Road.

The female driver, later identified as Perez, and a man claiming to be her husband were detained. The man claimed the car was theirs but they had not yet registered it in their names.

Police found the title and a large amount of cash stuffed into the side floorboard plastic. The title was made out to an individual with a different name. A blue pill was also discovered on the passenger floorboard. Three additional blue pills and a shard of a blue pill, which they believed was fentanyl, were in plain view.

The vehicle was seized and impounded, but the couple was released.

At a later date, police searched the vehicle and found a total of 155 fentanyl pills and other paraphernalia under the floorboard near Perez’s seat. Police note this amount of fentanyl, with the large sums of cash, are typically associated with drug trafficking.

Perez will face up to 10 years in prison if she is convicted.
