Keep Rio Rancho Beautiful and the city of Rio Rancho are looking for volunteers to participate in the 2024 Fall Community Cleanup.

The event, formerly known as Rally in the Desert, is set for 7-11 a.m. Sept. 14.

All volunteers will receive trash bags and gloves.

The goal for this year’s event is to have at least 500 volunteers remove more than 35 tons of litter from Rio Rancho.

Last year, the Rally in the Desert trash cleanup day saw 127 volunteers remove more than 18 tons of trash from Rio Rancho.

In 2020, 60.18 tons of trash had been picked up. In 2021, it went down to 49.4 tons. In 2022, it was 16.21 tons.

If you want to go out and help us make a big difference, we need as many crews as we can get to go out and help us clean up all these illegal dump sites that are just absolutely disgusting,” Rio Rancho Mayor Gregg Hull said. “I'm really upset with people who think that it's OK that they can just take the trash out in the middle of this desert and just toss it there and think that the magical trash fairy comes and cleans it all up. It's a community that comes together that says we're not going to tolerate this and we clean it up.”

To register electronically, email your information to fchavez@rrnm.gov, or you may mail or deliver your form to Rio Rancho City Hall located at 3200 Civic Center Circle NE, Suite 100, 87144.

Supplies will be available to pick up at City Hall from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 11-13 in the Parks and Recreation office.
