Garrett Wheeler, 38, of Waynsboro, Virginia, was arrested for shoplifting; two counts of possession of a controlled substance; receiving or transferring stolen motor vehicles; and two counts of possession or use of an altered, forged or fictitious license July 24 at Target on Crestview Drive.

Officers were patrolling the Target parking lot when the protection manager called and said Wheeler and a woman were shoplifting in the store. They went in and met with asset protection, who showed them real-time footage of the two suspects.

At some point, the two separated. The woman was arrested outside for some misdemeanor drug charges.

Waynsboro paid for all of the food items but none of the high-value items. The stolen items amounted to $778.76. Officers arrested Waynsboro shortly after and escorted him to the loss prevention office. He refused to speak with the officer at the scene.

While searching for his identification, officers came across two driver’s licenses with Waynsboro’s picture but different names. He was also in possession of fake $50 bills and drugs.

He was taken to a hospital nearby after complaining that his left foot hurt.

If convicted, Waynsboro faces 14-plus years in prison.
