Published Modified

An unplanned water release from the Cochiti Dam has caused Rio Rancho Fire and Rescue to warn of a possible flood risk on the Rio Grande.

According to a Facebook post from the department Tuesday afternoon, an unplanned release of water occurred between 10 a.m. and 10:50 a.m. at a rate of approximately 8,000 cubic feet per second.

"In the interest of public safety, please avoid the immediate channel way, riverbanks and floodway for the next 48 hours or until notified otherwise," the post states.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Albuquerque District is currently inspecting the channel to assess risk and gather further information.

The USACE-Albuquerque District will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
