The ASK Academy holds a showcase for its biomedical pathway group
RIO RANCHO — The ASK Academy held its inaugural showcase for their biomedical pathway students May 1 to show off the work they completed throughout the year in an “open house-esque” event.
“I’m incredibly proud of the projects our students created. Their goal was to take something they learned in class and teach it to their families and community members. Some projects reflected specific lessons, while others expanded on those concepts or combined multiple skills to deepen their impact,” ASK Academy instructor Michelle Nuanez said.
Nuanez is the high school science/biomedical project manager and “pathway lead.”
“As a school, we are committed to preparing scholars for their future careers, fostering a sense of obligation to our community, and equipping them with essential health knowledge to care for themselves and those around them,” Nuanez said.
The school was crowded with a number of school projects, and all students explained their research and projects to attendees.
“It was impressive to see our students, most of them 10th and 11th graders, not only perform clinical and lab skills — like performing and interpreting EKGs, CPR/AED and other skills for life threatening situations, and forensic lab skills — but also explain them confidently to the community,” Nuanez said.
Some of the projects featured taught attendees how to identify someone by looking at bones, informed about the early signs of strokes, the science of CPR, and one project dived deep into the “Integumentary trio: skin, hair and nails.”
“These scholars are learning how medicine connects to real life while also developing the ability to act to save a life, render aid or help someone understand their medical conditions when needed,” Nuranez said. “We also highlighted some of our program offerings, including job shadowing and dual credit, which many of our scholars take advantage of to boost their college and career readiness.”
