RIO RANCHO – That grunting and yelling you heard echoing through Rio Rancho last weekend wasn’t the sound of a massive construction project. No, it was the sound of the Cleveland High School Powerlifting team moving a ton of weight around as they marched to victory in their first meet of the season.

The Storm took on district rivals, the Volcano Vista Hawks, in the opening match of the powerlifting season and came out on top. The boys beat the Hawks 68-51, and the girls demolished the compeitition with a final score of 55-24.

That domination is to be expected though. The Cleveland Storm boys are the defending 5A State Champions and the girls finished in 2nd place last season. CHS has a tradition of dominating the sport of powerlifting.

On Jan. 17, the Storm opened their season at home with a win thanks to six different 1st-place finishes. Mario Munoz (114-pounds), Cameron Camacho (165), William Hoover (181), Dylan Waymire (198), Andrew Castillo (220) and Jon Baca (242) all won their weight classes.

Five Storm girls took 1st-place in their weight classes as well, helping them more than double their opponents point total. Kylie Danius (114), Affinity Archuleta (132), Jessica Romero (181), Millicent Lyman (198) and Ariel Dominguez all took the top spot in their classes.

Next up, the powerlifting squad heads to Grants for a meet on Feb. 22 followed by a home meet against the Eldorado Eagles on Mar. 8.

The RRHS Rams kick off their season this coming weekend when they take on the Jaguars of Atrisco Heritage. The Rams girls will be looking to defend their 2024 Powerlifting State title.
