Jonah Hernandez, a Las Cruces police officer, died Sunday after being stabbed while on duty.

Just before 5 p.m., Hernandez was stabbed as he responded to a trespassing call and died at the hospital.

The suspect was killed by a witness to the incident, who used Hernandez’s radio to call for assistance.

Hernandez leaves behind a wife and two sons, ages 10 and 2.Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Monday issued a statement following the death of Hernandez.

“I am horrified to hear of the murder of a young officer in Las Cruces last night,” Lujan Grisham said. “Officer Hernandez was, by all accounts, a dedicated and brave public servant and an outstanding son, husband and father.

“I am praying for Officer Hernandez’s wife, his two sons, his friends and family, his colleagues at the Las Cruces Police Department, and the Las Cruces community as they grieve his sudden and terrible loss. This loss is felt acutely by every first responder and their families, who selflessly serve and protect New Mexicans every day.

“Officer Hernandez, thank you for your service.”

Several Sandoval County and Rio Rancho leaders also shared their thoughts about the tragedy.

Rio Rancho Mayor Gregg Hull

“The city of Rio Rancho is with you. Our deepest sympathies to the family, the department and the city. You are in our prayers.”

U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich

“My thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of Las Cruces Police Department Officer Jonah Hernandez, who lost his life yesterday in the line of duty. We will not forget his sacrifice in service to his community.”

Sandoval County Commissioner Jay Block

“My deepest condolences and prayers are with Officer Hernandez and his family. It’s easier to be a criminal than a cop in New Mexico — The Roundhouse needs to wake up and pass bills that protect us and our law enforcement.”

Rio Rancho Police Department Chief Stewart Steele

“Our hearts and prayers are with the family of Las Cruces Police Officer and his department.”
