As the South Fork and Salt fires continue to burn near Ruidoso, Sandoval County Fire Rescue has sent a truck and two firefighters to help stop the destruction.
The South Fork Fire has burned more than 16,000 acres and damaged about 1,400 buildings. Two people have died from the fire, according to New Mexico State Police.
The Salt Fire has burned over 7,000 acres as of Wednesday.
According to Sandoval County officials, the two Wildland Division firefighters “are assigned to the South Fork and Salt fire complex. They are assisting in efforts to secure along the fires’ edge and prevent further damage in the village of Ruidoso.”
Thursday, President Joe Biden approved New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham's request for an expedited major disaster declaration for the fires. This will allow for more federal support, including FEMA assistance to the affected communities.
