ALBUQUERQUE — High school bands from across New Mexico marched their way up to UNM’s University Stadium Saturday, Oct. 19, for the 46th annual Zia Marching Band Fiesta, and the Cleveland Storm and Rio Rancho Rams marching bands both made the medal stand.

“RRPS was well represented,” said executive director of fine arts Kurt Schmidt in an email.

Indeed, Cleveland finished in second place and RRHS finished in third place at the event, which has come to be seen as a precursor to the NMAA State Marching Band Championship, which takes place Oct. 26 at RRHS Stadium. Less than a point separated the two Rio Rancho schools.

Clovis took the top spot, as many predicted, and appears to be the band to beat this year.

The Zia Fiesta was divided into a “preliminary competition” and a “finals competition.”

The top-10 scoring bands in the preliminary competition moved on to the finals, regardless of classification.
