RRPS Basketball teams look to gain momentum ahead of playoffs

CLEVELAND HIGH SCHOOL

BOYS

With only four games left in the regular season, the Storm boys are in an excellent position, ranked 4th in the state. They are 16-6 (5-1 in 5A-1) and have won six of their last seven, including a Feb. 4 narrow, 82-76 victory against the hometown rival Rio Rancho Rams. The game was a rematch of their bout at the Metro tournament in which the Rams took the Storm down in a 60-54 nail-biter. Cleveland’s one loss in that seven-game stretch was to the 1st-ranked Volcano Vista Hawks.

GIRLS

It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster season for the Storm girls who now sit at 12-10 (4-2 in 5A-1) after taking a beating at the hands of the Rio Rancho Rams on Feb. 5’s Pink Out game. But the Storm bounced back after some encouragement from new head coach Stacy Pokorsky. CHS demolished the rival Cibola Cougars by 23 points last Friday night. The squad will look to get behind team leaders Malia Mose and the Winter sisters to bring them home and secure a spot in the State Championship, Mar. 7-15.

BOYS

After a roaring start to the season that saw the Rams ranked as high as 4th in the state, RRHS has cooled significantly. They’ve lost seven of their last eight matches. But the squad is built to rebound and will look to do so against top-tier competition in the Cleveland Storm and Volcano Vista Hawks as they sharpen their skills for the State Championship.

GIRLS

The Rams girls' team may have dropped the last two games, but the point has been made: watch out for RRHS. This squad is cruising into the state tournament. With a 14-9 record (3-4 in 5A-1) they are currently ranked 10th in New Mexico with recent big wins over the Cleveland Storm and Cibola Cougars. Lilly and Madilynn Martinez will look to give the Rams some momentum heading into the playoffs as they face stiff competition down the stretch.
