The Rio Rancho Police Department is hosting its first-ever K9 Competition on May 18 at the Rio Rancho High School Football Stadium.

The public is invited to come watch police dogs from around the state compete in agility, detection and apprehension.

The event is part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics New Mexico.

There will be food trucks on site. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission is free, but donations can be made to support Special Olympics New Mexico by clicking here.

City Manager Matt Geisel joked that he will be attending with his dog, Scooter, in hopes that Scooter will learn from the K9 officers.

"I'm gonna take Scooter and see if he can learn a trick or two. But that may be a lost cause at this point with his bad habits," Geisel said.
