RR man arrested for firing guns near RRHS

RIO RANCHO — A Rio Rancho man was arrested June 11 for firing weapons near Rio Rancho High School.

Christian Obeji, 34, was charged with five counts of negligent use of a deadly weapon, evading police and receipt, transportation or possession of a firearm or destructive device by certain persons on the large sand hill directly behind the school.

According to a Rio Rancho Police Department criminal complaint, there were multiple 911 reports of shots fired behind the school.

The complaint states five individuals were suspected in the incident, all of which were found to be intoxicated. Obeji, was detained with a struggle but admitted he shot all four of the firearms he had in his vehicle. Officers searched the vehicle and found all four of his firearms. They also saw multiple spent bullet casings on the side of the hill.

Obeji had an active protection order against him as well.

If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison.
