In an effort to bolster community resilience in the face of potential disasters, the city of Rio Rancho is encouraging residents to participate in its Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program. Since its inception in 2002, nearly 2,000 individuals have completed the training, equipping themselves with essential life-saving skills.

“By attending, citizens can learn how to help themselves, their families and their neighbors during an emergency,” said Rio Rancho Emergency Manager Rose Martinez. “We want everyone in Rio Rancho and the surrounding area to be ready for emergencies.”

The CERT program offers comprehensive training on disaster preparedness, including first aid, search and rescue, fire safety and disaster psychology. Upon completion, graduates are eligible to join the Rio Rancho CERT team, which actively supports the community through volunteer work and continued training. Participants also receive a “GO-Kit” filled with essential emergency supplies.

“The Rio Rancho CERT team helps with community events, supports first responders and continues training,” Martinez said. “Graduates leave with a solid understanding of emergency preparedness for themselves, their families, pets and neighbors who might need help.”

While first responders may be overwhelmed in the aftermath of a major disaster, CERT-trained individuals can play a vital role in providing immediate assistance to victims until professional help arrives. By empowering our citizens, a stronger, more resilient community is created.

CERT training is offered two to three times a year. For more information or to enroll, contact the Rio Rancho Emergency Management Office.
