Report details Friday stabbing death

A man died at a hospital after being stabbed in the chest last week, and a criminal complaint filed by Rio Rancho police details what happened.
Larry Padilla, 64, of Rio Rancho, was arrested for first-degree murder in the death of Paul Cuevas, also Rio Rancho, around 4 a.m. Aug. 15 on the 1700 block of Darlene Road. Padilla was initially charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, but the charge was upgraded to first-degree murder when Cuevas died of his injury.
According to the report, Padilla told officers that his roommates started bothering him and using foul language towards him. He said Cuevas was the one who had been bothering him the most and he said he'd had enough of it. He said he grabbed a steak knife from the kitchen, went to the bedroom where the victim was sleeping and stabbed him in the chest. Then, he went to his other roo mates woke them up and told them to call police.
Padilla will face life in prison if he is convicted.
