As July 4th festivities approach, Rio Rancho Police Department is asking residents to use the non-emergency phone number to make complaints.

"Fourth of July is the busiest day of the year for the Sandoval County Regional Emergency Communications Center. Please keep in mind that 911 should be utilized for emergencies only. Please call our non-emergency number to report fireworks unless someone has been injured by a firework or a fire has started from fireworks," it reads in a post.

To report illegal fireworks, people can call 505-891-7226.

Rio Rancho's regulations on fireworks prohibit fireworks that go higher than 10 feet and are louder than a cap gun.

For a number of years, the city of Rio Rancho has had its ban in place regarding all of the types of fireworks it can legally prohibit under state statute. Only changes to state law would give the city of Rio Rancho authority to ban the sale and use of currently legal fireworks in the community.

Citizens should be cautious that purchasing fireworks from a vendor does not always mean that they are legal for use within city limits. If you believe illegal fireworks are being sold or used in Rio Rancho, contact the non-emergency telephone number.

Look for the “Safe and Sane” label when purchasing fireworks as these do not fly or explode. If you purchase fireworks in the city of Rio Rancho, the Fire and Rescue Department has inspected and approved all fireworks vendors to assure that the "Safe and Sane" criteria has been met.

Penalties and seizure

City representatives shall seize, take, remove or cause to be removed at the expense of the owner all stocks of noncomplying fireworks offered or exposed for sale, stored or held in violation of city ordinance.

Any person that is issued a citation and found guilty of selling, being in possession of, or using a firework within city limits in violation of city ordinance shall be fined not more than $500 or imprisoned for a period of not more than 90 days, or by both. Each instance of violation of city ordinance shall constitute a separate offense.

Igniting fireworks, starting or maintaining any fire, or smoking in the Rio Rancho bosque is prohibited by city ordinances at all times. Those found in violation of these restrictions can face a fine up to $500, 90 days of jail time, or both.

Fireworks safety

Improper use or using illegal fireworks can start a fire and potentially damage open spaces, homes and other property. Sparks or embers from fireworks can light grasses, weeds and trees on fire. When fanned by high winds, the destruction can be significant. Something as innocent as a sparkler can create enough heat and sparks to cause a fire.
