The National Night Out Event in Mariposa the evening of Aug. 7 was booming with people, and, despite the heat, people had fun.
To the delight of Community Safety Committee Co-Chair Jeanne Gowan, a little more than 100 people showed up for the event. The committee and the Mariposa Community Association planned the event jointly.
"It's going great," Gowan said.
She was pleased that Rio Rancho Police Department, Rio Rancho Fire and Rescue and the New Mexico Department of Justice all showed up to support the event.
Gowan recognized that it was hot but said there was free Starbucks and a couple of food trucks to quench people's thirst.
"I've been here since 3:30, and I'm telling you it is hot," she exclaimed.
According to Gowan, the real motivation for the event was to get people interested in Neighborhood Watch in Mariposa.
"This gets people to meet each other, and we're doing a big push on Neighborhood Watch. We've got our first Neighborhood Watch sign installed at the entrance of Mariposa Parkway and Blue Grama," Gowan said.
She says Mariposa has petitioned the city to have more signs installed throughout the neighborhood as well.
"Police have told us that this is the safest neighborhood in Rio Rancho, and we want to keep it that way," she added.
