The next in the Speaker Series with the Corrales Historical Society will be a talk by historian Nancy Bartlit on the movie “Oppenheimer.”

This presentation of “Oppenheimer Back in Los Alamos—Perilous Times” follows the 96th Academy Awards, held in Los Angeles on March 10, where “Oppenheimer” was one of the Best Picture nominees.

“In her discussion, Bartlit will provide several handouts that the Los Alamos County has printed about the movie, as well as pictures of Los Alamos scenes that were filmed for the movie. She will also review the Oscars’ nominations and winners, giving a historian’s opinion of the movie,” reads a release.

Bartlit will also compare the movie to Kai Bird’s book “American Prometheus” explaining how Manhattan Island was involved in the beginning of the project, “Oppie’s” New York experiences, and why “Oppie” came to New Mexico as a young man. She will address parts of the Los Alamos/Manhattan Project story left out of the movie as well.

Bartlit has lived in Los Alamos for 61 years.

“She has served the community as chair of the county council, among many other roles. She championed the Oppenheimer house purchase, the Manhattan Project National Historical Park, and the Oppenheimer-Groves bronze sculptures. She co-authored a book on New Mexico’s many roles in winning World War II,” it reads.

The Speaker Series is set for 2 p.m. March 17 at the Old San Ysidro Church in Corrales.
