BERNALILLO — Sandoval County Commissioners approved funding for Paseo Del Volcan’s extension during its May 28 meeting. A timeline for the construction has not been made public.

The approval for the extension of PDV from Unser Boulevard to Rainbow Boulevard, was looped in as a resolution with the county consent agenda for a $5 million New Mexico Department of Transportation grant.

According to the resolution cover page, the grant would help fund the PDV extension and be added to the $7 million the county currently has for the project.

“The County of Sandoval proposes to construct an extension to Paseo Del Vulcan from Unser Road to Rainbow Road in Sandoval County in the amount of $12 million,” the resolution states.

PDV, a connecting road vital to the Rio Rancho community, has been a two decades-long discussion in Sandoval County and New Mexico as a whole. A segment of PDV runs from U.S. Highway 550 to Unser Boulevard.

After studying the Rainbow extension area in 2024, NMDOT concluded that PDV will provide an efficient connection to Southern and Northern boulevards and will improve access to jobs, schools and services in Rio Rancho. It also stated it will improve access for police, fire and emergency medical services and provide a route usable by school buses.

This last amount of funding is the beginning of the construction stage in the project.

Once completed, the full extension project would take PDV all the way south to Interstate 40. The Rainbow extension is the next step in the plan.

County Manager Wayne Johnson talked about impacts on the timeline of the project in previous Observer articles.
